ABOUT TRACY’S Kenpo

Kenpo Karate is an art rooted in centuries of tradition. Kenpo Karate started as the Chinese martial art of Quánfǎ. Kenpo is its Japanese translation. Both of these words roughly translate to “law of fist” or “way of fist.” The art was brought from China to Japan where the Mitose Family adopted the term “Kenpo” to describe the art. The Mitose family brought Kenpo to the United States through Hawaii, where Grandmaster Ed Parker studied under William Chow, a student of James Mitose in the traditional art of Kenpo. Ed Parker then took Kenpo Karate and began teaching himself. Some of Parker’s earlier students were the Tracy brothers. in 1957, Grandmasters Al and Jim Tracy began training in Kenpo under Ed Parker in Pasadena, CA. However, the brothers believed that as Ed Parker revised his system he was veering too far away from the Chinese traditions of the martial art and so they decided to separate and create their own chain of studios outside of Pasadena, CA under the brand which we know today as Tracy’s Karate Worldwide, spreading Kenpo throughout the continental 48 states.
